““During the reigns of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed or conquered. It will crush all these kingdoms into nothingness, and it will stand forever. That is the meaning of the rock cut from the mountain, though not by human hands, that crushed to pieces the statue of iron, bronze, clay, silver, and gold. The great God was showing the king what will happen in the future. The dream is true, and its meaning is certain.””
Daniel 2:44-45 NLT
Hezekiah was a good king. He was ruling over Judah, minding his own business, when the king of Assyria, Sennacherib, set his sites on Jerusalem.
Now, Sennacherib was high on his own supply and supposed that he would find Jerusalem as easy a prey as all the other surrounding kingdoms he had conquered.
After a campaign of threatenings and intimidation against the people of Judah, he sent Hezekiah a letter saying he would destroy Jerusalem just as he had all the lands in his path.
“After Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it, he went up to the Lord’s Temple and spread it out before the Lord. And Hezekiah prayed this prayer before the Lord: “O Lord of Heaven’s Armies, God of Israel, you are enthroned between the mighty cherubim! You alone are God of all the kingdoms of the earth. You alone created the heavens and the earth. Bend down, O Lord, and listen! Open your eyes, O Lord, and see! Listen to Sennacherib’s words of defiance against the living God. “It is true, Lord, that the kings of Assyria have destroyed all these nations. And they have thrown the gods of these nations into the fire and burned them. But of course the Assyrians could destroy them! They were not gods at all—only idols of wood and stone shaped by human hands. Now, O Lord our God, rescue us from his power; then all the kingdoms of the earth will know that you alone, O Lord, are God.””
Isaiah 37:14-20 NLT
Hezekiah was confident that God would deliver Jerusalem. And—let me tell you—he was not disappointed!
““And this is what the Lord says about the king of Assyria: “‘His armies will not enter Jerusalem. They will not even shoot an arrow at it. They will not march outside its gates with their shields nor build banks of earth against its walls. The king will return to his own country by the same road on which he came. He will not enter this city,’ says the Lord. ‘For my own honor and for the sake of my servant David, I will defend this city and protect it.’” That night the angel of the Lord went out to the Assyrian camp and killed 185,000 Assyrian soldiers. When the surviving Assyrians woke up the next morning, they found corpses everywhere. Then King Sennacherib of Assyria broke camp and returned to his own land. He went home to his capital of Nineveh and stayed there. One day while he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisroch, his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer killed him with their swords. They then escaped to the land of Ararat, and another son, Esarhaddon, became the next king of Assyria.”
Isaiah 37:33-38 NLT
Indeed, Sennacherib found out the hard way that no one can stand against the Lord! If He is determined to save, He-Who-is-Mighty-to-Save, will do it.
Frankly, the kingdoms of this world don’t stand a chance. As we discussed on “Day 173,” all other authority is a passing illusion and will one day be destroyed.
Now, King Nebuchadnezzar had a dream in which the Lord showed him all the main kingdoms of the world, from the Babylonian kingdom, moving forward through millennia, to the end of them all.
The Kingdoms were represented with a huge statue having a head of gold, chest and arms of silver, belly and thighs of bronze, legs of iron, and feet of iron mixed with clay. In the days of the “toe kingdoms,” something would happen to bring all the earthly kingdoms down!
In our opening scripture we see Daniel giving Nebuchadnezzar the interpretation of the dream, in which, he describes that final Kingdom!
My friend, resistance is futile. The Lord’s Kingdom will smash all other kingdoms to pieces and then fill the earth! And, the King of that Kingdom is already OUR King: Jesus Christ!
Peace to you.
Jesus is coming! Get ready for Him!
