“In those days, while Mordecai sat within the king’s gate, two of the king’s eunuchs, Bigthan and Teresh, doorkeepers, became furious and sought to lay hands on King Ahasuerus. So the matter became known to Mordecai, who told Queen Esther, and Esther informed the king in Mordecai’s name.”
Esther 2:21-22 NKJV
Theodore Roosevelt is credited with saying, “Knowing what’s right doesn’t mean much unless you do what’s right.”
C. S. Lewis said, “Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.”
The Bible says, “Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.”
James 4:17 NKJV
But what do you say? Do you say, “It’s not my job,” or, “Nobody else is doing that,” or, “I might face retribution,” or any number of other excuses for why you are exempt from doing the right thing?
Let’s face it, sometimes doing the right thing is hard. Sometimes it’s easier—in the moment—to not do what is right; but at what cost?
“And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.”
Galatians 6:9-10 NKJV
Doing good and doing the right thing often overlap; and, in both cases we will have to answer for ourselves when we have neglected either. On the other hand, there is reward for those who are obedient in doing good and in doing the right thing.
Today we see that Mordecai is in the right place at the right time to be given the opportunity to do the right thing by exposing the plot against the king. He definitely could have allowed fear of retribution keep him from acting. For example, what if the eunuchs were successful in their plot? Surely he would pay a great price for having tried to stop it. But Mordecai did do the right thing. He told Esther about the plot and Esther did the right thing by conveying this information to the king.
Indeed, we are living in an hour where there is so much iniquity that it would be easy to despair of doing the right thing. But, we must not let this happen. If we are the last ones doing the right thing, then so be it.
Finally, as for retribution, I truly believe that those who do the right thing have much less to fear than those who do not.
Peace to you.
Jesus is coming! Get ready for Him!
