“A Journey with John” Day 10: A miracle for a nobleman (John 4:43-54)

Last time, our guide took us to witness what turned out to be a wonderful revival in Samaria. Indeed, many of the Samaritans came to believe in Jesus because of the testimony of a wayward woman.

Before heading back out with John on our next excursion, let’s look at the new people we met last time:

> Some Samaritans from the village of the wayward woman

We’re all caught up. Now let’s catch up with our guide. It looks like Jesus is on the move:

After spending the two days in Samaria, Jesus left and went to Galilee. It seems that Jesus may have decided to go to Cana of Galilee, rather than back to Nazareth (also in Galilee, but a few miles away), because, as we heard Him say, “A prophet has no honor in his own country.” But Jesus does receive an excellent welcome in Galilee because the people there had seen the signs He performed at the Passover Feast (our destination on “Day 5”). As Jesus arrives in Cana, He is met by a nobleman from Capernaum. The nobleman begs Jesus to come with him and heal his critically ill son. Jesus remarks that the people are always seeking a sign, but tells the nobleman to go home, where he will find that his son has recovered. Surely enough, as the nobleman leaves to go home, he is met by his servants who tell him that his son has recovered. The nobleman asks them what time his son recovered, and finds out that it was exactly the same time Jesus said his son would recover! This miracle leads to the nobleman’s whole household believing in Jesus. It seems that we have just seen the second sign that Jesus has performed since he came out of Judea.

Our highlighted verses for today:

“Now after the two days He departed from there and went to Galilee. For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country. So Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum. Then Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe.” Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your son lives.” So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way. And as he was now going down, his servants met him and told him, saying, “Your son lives!” So the father knew that it was at the same hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” And he himself believed, and his whole household.”

‭‭John‬ ‭4‬:‭43‬-‭44‬, ‭46‬, ‭48‬, ‭50‬-‭51‬, ‭53‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Question for reflection:

Why would people fail to honor a prophet who is from their own country?

Next time, we’re going to go with Jesus to a pool!

Peace to you.

Jesus is coming! Get ready for Him!
