“Trust in and rely confidently on the Lord with all your heart And do not rely on your own insight or understanding. In all your ways know and acknowledge and recognize Him, And He will make your paths straight and smooth [removing obstacles that block your way]. Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord [with reverent awe and obedience] and turn [entirely] away from evil. It will be health to your body [your marrow, your nerves, your sinews, your muscles—all your inner parts] And refreshment (physical well-being) to your bones.” Proverbs 3:5-8 AMP
Once I was asking the Lord why I had so much anxiety, so much of the time. Now, I thought I was just expressing my angst and wasn’t really expecting an answer. But the Lord did answer me saying, “Because you don’t trust Me.”
That answer was like a frying pan up side my head. I never thought that the stress and anxiety I was experiencing were connected to a lack of trust in the Lord. But, being challenged with this blunt answer, I could not defend against it.
Sadly, we can love the Lord, even be living for Him, yet lack rest because we lack trust. Or, perhaps better understood, our fear outweighs our trust in Him.
Perhaps we think that our worrying somehow gives us control over something that is seen as a threat of some sort. But, anxiety and ruminating do not bring control. However, trusting the One Who can bring all things into conformity to what is best for us, will bring rest and solutions.
“Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; Do not fret—it only causes harm. For evildoers shall be cut off; But those who wait on the Lord, They shall inherit the earth.” Psalms 37:7-9 NKJV
The above observation by David, not only applies to the temptation to fret over the fact that evil people may seem to prosper and/or get by with their mischief, this advice applies to ALL of our distress.
The One Who bids us come to Him for rest, also tells us this:
“That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? “And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith? “So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” Matthew 6:25-33 NLT
You have probably heard our opening scripture about trusting in the Lord. But in order to have rest, true rest, we must put it into action. We must trust the Lord to give us what we need while He is working ALL things together for our good.
Tomorrow we’ll bring all of this together.
Peace to you. Jesus is coming! Get ready for Him! #ThePropheticWord
