“And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him.“
Revelation 22:1-3 NKJV
During the Babylonian captivity, the prophet Ezekiel was given a guided tour through a new Jerusalem and a new temple. At one point Ezekiel sees water flowing from under the threshold of the temple and becoming a great river.
“Then he brought me back to the door of the temple; and there was water, flowing from under the threshold of the temple toward the east, for the front of the temple faced east; the water was flowing from under the right side of the temple, south of the altar. He brought me out by way of the north gate, and led me around on the outside to the outer gateway that faces east; and there was water, running out on the right side. And when the man went out to the east with the line in his hand, he measured one thousand cubits, and he brought me through the waters; the water came up to my ankles. Again he measured one thousand and brought me through the waters; the water came up to my knees. Again he measured one thousand and brought me through; the water came up to my waist. Again he measured one thousand, and it was a river that I could not cross; for the water was too deep, water in which one must swim, a river that could not be crossed.“
Ezekiel 47:1-5 NKJV
Ezekiel’s guide then informs Ezekiel concerning the function of this river.
“When I returned, there, along the bank of the river, were very many trees on one side and the other. Then he said to me: “This water flows toward the eastern region, goes down into the valley, and enters the sea. When it reaches the sea, its waters are healed. And it shall be that every living thing that moves, wherever the rivers go, will live. There will be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters go there; for they will be healed, and everything will live wherever the river goes.“
Ezekiel 47:7-9 NKJV
Yes, this river brought life to whatever it touched.
It isn’t a far leap to see how this river, flowing from the right side of the temple, could be compared to the flow of water and blood from Jesus when he was pierced with the spear of a Roman soldier.
The blood of our dear Lord has provided healing for our body, soul, and spirit. And—through Him—we can receive His precious Holy Spirit Who ministers the new life now made possible through our salvation.
The Holy Spirit of God is the River of God. The Holy Spirit was poured out on us by Christ.
“But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.“
Titus 3:4-7 NKJV
This River is Who Jesus was referencing in John 7: 37-39 (see Day 11).
Over the last few days we have discussed just a few of the benefits of being indwelled by the Holy Spirit of God. Indeed, God’s precious Holy Spirit connects us to the dynamo of God through which we can walk NOW as children of God.
Just as Ezekiel’s river progressed from shallow to deep, so our walk in the Spirit must progress from limited knowledge and limited submission in the new believer (ankle deep), to becoming that which moves us along and lifts us up and away from our old, unchanged ways of being and doing.
Remember, the degree to which the Holy Spirit has access to our lives is also the degree to which we can be led by the Spirit and have His fruit manifesting in our lives. As well, the power of the Holy Spirit will not be manifested in an unsurrendered life.
In our opening scripture we see a river flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb. This is not a different river but is the River of the Holy Spirit of God, the life-giving Spirit prophesied by the prophets coming before Jesus, as well as Jesus, Himself (as we discussed earlier).
Child of God, launch out into the River! Allow the Holy Spirit of God, the River of God, to guide you now, heal you now, bring life and peace to you now! Let Him take you all the way home!
“There is a river, and it flows from deep within
There is a fountain, that frees the soul from sin
Come to this water, there is a vast supply
There is a river, that never shall run dry” (“There is a River,” Bill & Gloria Gather)
Peace to you.
Jesus is coming! Get ready for Him!
