“I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace. In the world you have tribulation and distress and suffering, but be courageous [be confident, be undaunted, be filled with joy]; I have overcome the world.” [My conquest is accomplished, My victory abiding.]“
John 16:33 AMP
Shirley Caesar wrote a song entitled, “This Joy I Have.” It’s a song with very simple lyrics, but profoundly true lyrics, nonetheless. The message of the song is that joy that the world didn’t give, can’t be taken away by the world.
“This joy that I have
The world didn't give it to me
This joy that I have
The world didn't give it to me
This joy that I have
The world didn't give it to me
And the world can't take it away”
All around us we see trouble. Yes, the pressure imposed on us—just in the process of living from one day to the next—can drain you and rob you of any sense of joy. It’s no wonder that so many people are on anti-depressant drugs. It’s no wonder that so many people turn to drugs or alcohol to forget about the pain and turmoil raging inside. Indeed, it is no wonder that people do ridiculous things to try and garner some modicum of joy in their lives.
Yes, it’s understandable that people living in the world without Christ would be devoid of joy. But, for those who have come to faith in Jesus Christ, joy should be an ongoing state of being, no matter what we are facing.
In Psalms 46 the psalmist declares that though the world is in turmoil, the people of God can be glad. The river he references as bringing gladness to the city of God, is the same River, bringing gladness (joy) into the lives of those who have the Holy Spirit dwelling within them.
“God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, Even though the earth be removed, And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though its waters roar and be troubled, Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God, The holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High.“
Psalms 46:1-4 NKJV
The prophet Isaiah expresses a similar truth: Because God is with us, helping us, we can be joyful as we partake of the wonderful salvation He provides.
“And in that day you will say: “O Lord, I will praise You; Though You were angry with me, Your anger is turned away, and You comfort me. Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid; ‘For Yah, the Lord, is my strength and song; He also has become my salvation.’ ” Therefore with joy you will draw water From the wells of salvation.“
Isaiah 12:1-3 NKJV
Through the work of Jesus Christ, we have been provided a never-ending source of salvation. And, because of that salvation, we can receive the Holy Spirit into our being Who will enable us to have the fruit of joy manifested in our lives!
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.“
Galatians 5:22-23 NKJV
In our opening scripture, we see the Lord telling His disciples that they can be of good cheer, because He has overcome the world. Indeed, His spirit within us reminds us that we are the children of God.
“For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.“
Romans 8:15-17 NKJV
Child of God, the Lord has overcome the world and given us access to His precious Holy Spirit. Now that’s a joy the world didn’t give to you; and the world can’t take it away.
Peace to you.
Jesus is coming! Get ready for Him!
