“He had learned of Mordecai’s nationality, so he decided it was not enough to lay hands on Mordecai alone. Instead, he looked for a way to destroy all the Jews throughout the entire empire of Xerxes.”
Esther 3:6 NLT
It’s the stuff fairytales are made of. The story goes that there is some evil queen or king who sets out to destroy anyone more powerful, more beautiful, more anything, than they are. They desire to dominate and anything in the way of attaining that goal will be mercilessly attacked. And, whereas this dynamic makes for a compelling storyline, it is not only seen in fairytales.
You see, in order for evil to survive, it knows that it must get rid of anyone who recognizes it. Indeed, one of evil’s favorite tools of control is deceit. Where truth is still found, evil cannot completely dominate. Therefore, as long is there is even one who will not surrender total control to evil, evil will not be satisfied.
The dynamic of evil never being satisfied is also seen if we are foolish enough to try to compromise or negotiate with evil. The more you give to evil, the more it wants.
Additionally, evil even comes to disdain those who it has completely dominated. It makes fools of its victims and eventually hangs them out as trophies for all to see.
In our opening scripture we see that Haman—having been stirred up against Mordecai—decides that it will not be enough to just get rid of him. No, he must get rid of all who share his same beliefs. Again, evil simply will not put up with anyone who will not bow to it. So, a plot must be devised; but we’ll hear more about that tomorrow.
For now let us remember that any negotiation or acquiescence to evil will only increase what it will demand.
Indeed, trying to negotiate or compromise with evil is like throwing your arm or leg to a ravenous beast in hopes of saving your life. You’re still going to be it’s dinner.
Our hope against evil is only found in the only One Who ever defeated evil on its own turf. Our Lord Jesus Christ is the only force capable of keeping us out of the never-satisfied belly of evil.
Peace to you.
Jesus is coming! Get ready for Him!
