100 Days with David 2025 Day 28: The Lord is mighty and He is mighty to save.

“In my distress I called upon the Lord, And cried out to my God; He heard my voice from His temple, And my cry came before Him, even to His ears. Then the earth shook and trembled; The foundations of the hills also quaked and were shaken, Because He was angry. Smoke went up from His nostrils, And devouring fire from His mouth; Coals were kindled by it. He bowed the heavens also, and came down With darkness under His feet. And He rode upon a cherub, and flew; He flew upon the wings of the wind. He made darkness His secret place; His canopy around Him was dark waters And thick clouds of the skies. From the brightness before Him, His thick clouds passed with hailstones and coals of fire. The Lord thundered from heaven, And the Most High uttered His voice, Hailstones and coals of fire. He sent out His arrows and scattered the foe, Lightnings in abundance, and He vanquished them. Then the channels of the sea were seen, The foundations of the world were uncovered At Your rebuke, O Lord, At the blast of the breath of Your nostrils. He sent from above, He took me; He drew me out of many waters. He delivered me from my strong enemy, From those who hated me, For they were too strong for me.”

Years ago, I would often see a little potbelly pig and huge Great Dane, having escaped their owner’s home, on the lam together. Indeed, they could be seen nonchalantly going up and down the street near where I live. And believe me, no one, no other animals, dared mess with the little pig because that mighty Great Dane was with him.

Now, I can’t imagine anybody not liking the feeling of being with someone or something that can protect you from harm, something/someone seen as being powerful.

Look at the case of a “weakling” hanging out with a “tough guy” to keep from being picked on. He isn’t powerful, but feels safe because of the powerful company he keeps.

Then there’s the phenomenon of people going out and getting a dog known for being a “vicious” breed. You can tell that they like it when people are afraid of their dog. It apparently makes them feel safer and/or more powerful.

And, we don’t have time here to go through all the different types of weapons people carry—powerful weapons—meant to scatter their enemies.

Sadly, no matter how powerful the weapon or the company you keep, there’s always somebody, something, more powerful. That is, unless, your “bodyguard” is the Lord.

In today’s portion from David’s psalms, we see David painting quite the visual of God’s power and might.

In fact, Psalms 18 was actually his response to the Lord delivering him from Saul and his armies. David describes something comparable to an atomic blast! Knowing how all the odds were against him, knowing the danger of being out of favor with a powerful man like King Saul, he also knew—by experience—that the awesome power of God could save him, whether the foe be a lion, bear, giant, or even a King!

Child of God, no matter what you are facing, no matter how scary your enemy looks, remember, when the Lord is on your side, there is no power in heaven or on earth that can get through Him to get to you! As the psalmist also said:

“In my distress I prayed to the Lord, and the Lord answered me and set me free. The Lord is for me, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me? Yes, the Lord is for me; he will help me. I will look in triumph at those who hate me. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in people. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.”
